If possible, it’s easier on both partners in the training relationship to have short sessions throughout the day, rather than one long session in the evening. Dogs have short attention spans, with puppies unable to concentrate for more than a few seconds. So, ten one-minute sessions probably are better than one ten-minute session. Puppies should not be asked to repeat a cued behavior more than two or three times; that’s all they can handle at one sitting. In addition, training that falls in one large block can become a burden. The owner may skip a night and pledge to do a session twice as long the next day, but that rarely happens. Training times that are short, fun, and easy to fit into a schedule are more likely than marathon sessions to be repeated—and repetition equals results. In addition to a specific routine for training, with scheduled times, remember your dog is learning how to act every moment of the day. Regardless of what the clock says, be ready to make any moment an opportunity for behavior modification.
